Is it better to buy a cheap or more expensive filter?
Would it be better to buy a 2 dollar zeikos filter or a 30 dollar sigma filter? My lens is worth about 250 bucks and its paired with a d90. The sigma is out of my price range unfortunately; should i just splurge and get it? I know he zeikos does create flare, but its cheap and its protection. I really cant decide on this one.
Consider this: Your image has to pass through that glass to get to your sensor. If you buy cheap, crappy glass that has an effect on your image. Filters can easily cost more than your lens does.
Filters aren't for protection. They do something to the image. If you're looking for a UV filter thinking it protects the glass, it KIND OF does, but a cheap one will do more damage to your photo than it good in protecting your glass. If you care properly for your camera? You need not use a filter as "protection." Always put your lens cap on when not in use. Don't let your camera swing around freely and hit things-your bound to break more than a lens or filter.
Use some common sense.
