Flexible Lens
Question about manual focus in DSLRs... how flexible is it?

i don't own one now, but probably will in the future. But I had a quick question. When focusing on a subject manually, is there a perfect focus area on the lens, or is there an area where if you just turned the ring on the lens ever so slightly, the subject would still be in perfect focus? I mean, is there a little flexibility in the focus ring, or is there an exact spot for perfect focus. Thanks

Some (more expensive) lenses in Canon line has FTM (full time manual focusing). This means you can "touch up" focus at any time, even in AUTO mode. It is extremely convenient and does not get in the way at all.

The focusing ring does not move / turn at all during focusing (by the camera), and it is usually without sound, too (that's Ultrasonic motor). All of their "L" lenses are like that.

Without this feature, after the camera focuses on the subject, you have to switch to M(anual) mode, then turn the focus ring, to fine tune it (and switch it back to AUTO mode when you're finished. It's a pain.

Or you can leave it in MANUAL mode and focus it yourself. The viewfinder (optical viewfinder)'s focusing point(s) should show you when something is in focus by blinking red (and beeping sound, too).

Hope this helps.
