is it bad that im a photog and i shoot on auto 
?
i find that i take very nice pictures but im so lost... like in a situation when i dont have enough light i just use trial and error instead of knowing the proper thing to do... but i dont really let people know this but all of the stuff i learned in school kind of went in 1 ear and out the other... i studied so much about aperture and shutter speed im ok with that but ISO i can never seem to really understand it... like i could be on MM and read a forum and have no clue what the photogs are talking about is there a way to help me remember this stuff?? it just seems like my mind wont retain any information on photography lol... i think maybe im just not technical like ppl who say i got the new nikon blah blah that doesnt interest me so i feel left out when i dont know about all the new cameras... i just want a camera that can give me the best picture... is this weird???
First of all, I completely disagree with Foto Z's claim that you are only a photographer if you earn money. Money has absolutely nothing to do with it. What determines whether or not you are a "photographer" is if you have the ability to take the picture and get the image that you want. Do you know how to take an interesting and meaningful picture? Can you visualize a picture in your mind ahead of time, and have a clear understanding of how to set the aperture and shutter speed to get the picture you want? Do you thoroughly understand exposure and depth of field? If the answer is yes to all of those, then you are a photographer. If the answer is no, then you are not yet a photographer. Money has nothing to do with it. Many people are into photography just as a hobby, and might be quite good at it. The only way money matters is if you are a "professional photographer" or "commercial photographer."
However, I do agree with him that in order to truly call yourself a photographer, you MUST have a clear understanding of exposure, shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, etc and how they relate to each other. There is no way around that. It's like any other craft. You have to know the basics. Photography is an art, but there is also a science to it and you need to understand the techniques.
If things "go in one ear and out the other" for you then I'm not sure how to help you. Maybe take some more time to learn on your own. There are millions of books where you can learn the basics of photography. Go to your local library and check out some books. Try learning one thing at a time. Maybe one decide that you'll just read about aperture and understand that first. Then another day read about shutter speed. Then depth of field. Whatever works best. But you have to learn them. So if you REALLY want to learn about photography, then you're going to have to get better focused and be more patient. No one can help you learn something if you don't want to learn.
You are NOT a photographer yet. And if you're only shooting on auto all the time, then no, you're not a photographer then either.
